Schools to give calling cards to military

Posted by jeromesimpson on May 31, 2008

Three area charter schools are helping overseas military personnel keep in touch with family members this holiday season.

The schools — Bonita Springs Charter, Gateway Charter and Six Mile Charter Academy — are taking $6.50 donations for prepaid phone cards through Dec. 21, the last day of classes before the two-week winter break. Charter Schools USA of Fort Lauderdale runs the schools.

The effort is part of Operation Uplink, a program that provides free long-distance phone cards to active military and hospitalized veterans.

Donors have the opportunity to include a personal message to soldiers with their contribution, expressing their gratitude and support.

Operation Uplink is a national program sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

Fastest paying paid to click (PTC) site

Posted by jeromesimpson on May 31, 2008

This entry is posted to keep track of the fastest paying paid to click (PTC) site. In the PTC industry, more than half of the sites are scam which include sites not paying and sites closed down without paying.

Among those few PTC sites are still active such as Hits4Pay, ClixSense, AdBux, Bux.to, AdverCash, TitanClicks, WordLinx and UrOnlineBux, only two of them are fast paying, i.e Hits4Pay and UrOnlineBux.

Some of the above sites pays but the payment processing is awfully slow ranging from 60days to 120days. Imagine, receiving your commission 120days later.

Here’s the FAST payment history from UrOnlineBux, so far:

1. UrOnlineBux Payment #1
Requested date: Apr 10, 2008
Fund transferred: Apr 14, 2008
Processing days: 5
Amount cashout: USD10.00

2. UrOnlineBux Payment #2
Requested date: Apr 17, 2008
Fund transferred: Apr 27, 2008
Processing days: 11
Amount cashout: USD16.84

As for HitsPay, their payment is automated so long as you have reached the minimum payout of USD25.00 and it will be cleared out on the 1st of each month. Most of the time, you will received your fund with 10 to 15 days.

About Paid to Click (PTC) site: PTC is not an employment opportunity or a get-rich-quick scheme to make money. So if any PTC offers you instant wealth or opportunity to earn thousands a day from PTC activity, it’s likely a scam.

PTC is general is a way to earn some extra cash by viewing email ads or promotional page from their advertisers. Earning can be slow but if have the right approach in enrolling referrals, you earn would increase at a faster rate.

A Little Respect

Posted by jeromesimpson on May 31, 2008

One of the most common complaints about security is the rudeness of the

screeners. I typed out a whole lot of theorizing on customer service in the

US and Canada, southern USA hospitality, the British class system, French culture, the effect of competition on corporate attitudes towards customer service, and the public face of police services. But in the end I deleted it most of it. Simply put, the public expects smiles, please, thank you, and deference. The screeners expect orderly, respectful compliance. Both groups are very disappointed by what actually happens.

Security screeners are stuck with the dual and daunting task of preventing

potentially dangerous objects from going onboard aircraft, and acting as the

public face of the inconvenience of airports. I imagine that many of them try to

face each new customer with cheer, or at least guarded neutrality, but after

five hours of scowling, whining, eye-rolling passengers, they’re probably doing

well not to actually swear back at you. The public are incredibly rude to the

screeners. The screeners are rude back. The whole process becomes

self-perpetuating pit of nastiness.

My strategy: be nice. If I have to, I pretend that the screeners are

behaving as reasonable human beings, and respond accordingly to my fantasies.

The aim is for an Academy Award level performance, not sarcastic pseudoniceness.

The first step in being nice is to follow the rules. I mean really, the rules

don’t hurt me. It’s a nuisance to get my laptop, my boarding pass, my baggie, my

shoes and my parka all organized on the belt, but that nuisance is not the fault

of the screener.

I smile and say hello to any screener who looks at me. I say excuse me, and please, if I have a question. I say thank you if they give me an instruction or a bin. If they thank me, I tell them they’re welcome. If I discover that I’ve accidentally packed something I shouldn’t have, I apologize, and admit to knowing better. Everyone knows that throwing a tantrum will not result in being able to keep the prohibited item. And I know I feel better after an encounter if I think I’ve behaved in a civilized manner. It’s a game. I score points if the screener is nice back to me.

A little bit of niceness goes a long way, in both directions. Some of the poor screeners are so starved for love that their gratitude shows. Some of them are so hardened in their ways you’d think I swore at them. It’s like those studies showing that people are happier when they give money away as opposed to spending it on themselves. Is it my being polite that makes me happy, or someone else’s being polite to me?

On a recent trip, I decided to try WestJet’s e-Boarding Pass. I followed the instructions on their site and they e-mailed me a boarding pass. Not a boarding pass to be printed out, but a paperless one. At security, I displayed it as instructed on my computer screen. The screener looked at it, looked confused, and called another screener. They told me it was not adequate. It didn’t qualify as a boarding pass because it didn’t have a barcode.

I went back to the check in area and used a kiosk to get a paper boarding pass. I returned to the screening area and got the same screener. She was openly grateful for my easy acceptance of the original decision. I won’t tell you what I got away with because of it.

I wonder if I put a big tinfoil happy face inside the bottom of my carry on, if it would show up as a happy face on the x-ray machine. Maybe I’ll try it next trip.

The picture is of a bilingually labelled, CATSA-issue one-litre plastic bag.

These are available free in most Canadian airports, from a table in front of

security. I’ve also seen bags for sale in US airports. They should also have a

vending machine for little mailing boxes, and postage, so you could mail things

you weren’t allowed to carry. I think a lot of US airports don’t have mailboxes,

though, so that would be a barrier.

Point Of Sale Systems: How to Choose One That’s Right for Your Business

Posted by jeromesimpson on May 30, 2008

A point of sale (POS) system can have a dramatic impact on the way you run your business — and on your bottom line. Choosing the right one requires careful planning.

Here are some of the things you need to think through to make a good decision when selecting POS equipment and systems for your business. Use this list as a starting point for your planning process.

* First of all, price should not be the main consideration when buying a POS system. The improved efficiency, greater flexibility and better reporting should pay for the investment in a reasonable period of time.

* Don’t start off by calling for lists of features of various POS systems. Instead, start with a comprehensive analysis of what your business requires.

* Do you have operations spread over multiple locations? What are the implications?

If you run a restaurant, for example, you may need to keep some parameters common across locations while varying others. For instance, your menu may be identical at all locations, but prices of some items may vary from one outlet to another. The system you choose must be capable of implementing such differences.

* How easily can you make changes to the system? You can be sure that your business will keep changing in many respects — employees join and leave, prices go up or down, your product range expands, locations get added or deleted and so on.

Ask yourself if the programming interface will easily allow your employees to execute such changes.

* Will it be possible to make changes ahead of time? For example, if you’re beginning a special promotion on November 15, can you input the price changes well in advance and set the system to automatically effect the changes on that date?

This as well as other types of flexibility are essential for many retail operations.

* To what extent will the POS system need to integrate with your accounting system? Does it have to be real time? Or is it enough to have an export of entries at day-end?

* If you are running a bar, does the POS system need to work with liquor control devices? A liquor control device tracks pours from bottles. This makes billing easier and reduces shrinkage.

* Will the credit / debit card processing system in the POS equipment work well with your merchant account?

* Will the system allow you to implement special deals for frequent shoppers? For instance, each purchase could have points associated with them and these points could eventually translate into lower prices or free gifts.

* What reporting capabilities will you need? If you work across multiple locations, will the system give you an online real-time report of transactions completed?

Most dealers will have sample reports available. Ask to see them so that you can compare better.

* In most cases, the POS system will have to be upgraded as your needs evolve and expand. How quickly can the dealer respond to your needs?

Also, most dealers put out regular software upgrades. Are they included in the contract or does the dealer charge extra for them?

For the sake of avoiding compatibility problems, plan to purchase new hardware of the same kind as the original. That way you’ll ensure everything works well together — and even if there are problems, you can get the dealer to handle it.

* Support is a critical consideration. What happens if your POS system goes down? This can have a serious impact on the business. You need to get a detailed written agreement on how the dealer is going to handle breakdowns.

The dealer may try to diagnose and solve the problem over phone initially. If that doesn’t work, they may send support staff to your location. And if the problem can’t be solved quickly, you may need to get equipment on loan till your system is repaired.

POS system downtime can have serious implications. Make sure you get the support you need.

The above list should help trigger ideas about the kind of issues you need to look at. Do your planning well before deciding on a POS system for your business.

“Air Force One Dropped Me Off”

Posted by jeromesimpson on May 29, 2008

So it seems a drunk guy managed to wander onto the runway in Dallas. That’s quite a trick, getting onto airside, crossing the apron, and heading either down the taxiway or across the rough all the way to the runway. Those expanses of pavement are bigger than they look.

It sounds like someone who released him from a drunk tank may be at fault for leaving him on airside, as opposed to him actually getting through an airside door. But stranger things have happened.

Personally, I would have gone with “little green men” over “Air Force One.”
