Adsense TOS Update on Link Units and Ads Landing Page

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 14, 2008

Adsense Blog has posted update on Adsense TOS or Policies regarding the allowable no. of Adsense link units on a web page and the required Landing Page for online advertising.

Placement of Adsense Link Units

The good news under the “Ad Placement” section of new Adsense policies, Adsense publishers are allowed to place up to three (3) link units on each web page. This is in addition to the three (3) ad units, two (2) Google search boxes and two (2) referral units for each Google referral product.

Required Landing Page for Online Advertising

Under the “Site and Ad Behavior” of said new Adsense policies, Adsense publishers who use online advertising (with Adwords and/or other online advertising sites) are required to comply with the quality guidelines for landing pages that shows Google Ads. As per the quality guidelines, landing page must provide relevant and substantial content, treat a user’s personal information responsibly, and must be easily navigable.

Important Details of Quality Guidelines for Landing Page

  • Link to the page on your site that provides the most useful and accurate information about the product or service in your ad.
  • Ensure that your landing page is relevant to your keywords and your ad text.
  • Distinguish sponsored links from the rest of your site content.
  • Try to provide information without requiring users to register. Or, provide a preview of what users will get by registering.
  • In general, build pages that provide substantial and useful information to the end-user. If your ad does link to a page consisting of mostly ads or general search results (such as a directory or catalog page), provide additional information beyond what the user may have seen in your ad or on the page prior to clicking on your ad.
  • You should have unique content (should not be similar or nearly identical in appearance to another site).
  • Users should be able to easily find what your ad promises.
  • Openly share information about your business. Clearly define what your business is or does.
  • Honor the deals and offers you promote in your ad.
  • Deliver products, goods, and services as promised.
  • Provide clear information as to the reason of collecting user’s personal information, how it is use and user options to limit the use of their personal information.
  • Provide an easy path for users to purchase or receive the product or offer in your ad.
  • Avoid excessive use of pop-ups, pop-unders, and other obtrusive elements throughout your site.
  • Avoid altering users’ browser behavior or settings (such as back button functionality, browser window size) without first getting their permission.
  • If your site automatically installs software, consider adopting Google’s Software Principles.

In summary, Adsense publishers may now place a maximum of three (3) link units for each web page but Adsense publishers who are using any online advertising to promote your web site that make money with Adsense must ensure its compliance with the new Adsense Policies on online advertising with Adwords and/or other advertising sites.

Always remember that failure to comply with Adsense TOS and Policies may result to account termination.

Fine Line Between Ignorance and Corruption

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 14, 2008

Over the past week more Countrywide wrongdoing has come to light.  Specifically, its preferential loans for public officials and business partners.  What began last Saturday with this article from the WSJ last Saturday has grown throughout the week to culminate with this Portfolio article expose listing more "Friends of Angelo" or "FoAs".  Since no one has come forward to refute the preferential treatment given by Countrywide to these individuals who are supposedly granted with the "public’s trust", The Prince has a difficult time not believing the graft that has been uncovered.

All the articles try to discount the story by saying that the preferential loan treatment is not illegal so long as Countrywide did not receive preferential treatment.  Then all the articles go to great lengths to say that it has not come to light yet whether or not Countrywide received such special treatment.  The Prince is not surprised that such shady deals occurred since such deals are just a reflection of the fraudulent behavior that percolated down from the upper reaches of mortgage finance at the rating agencies down to the broker on the corner.  What really troubles The Prince is that there really is no way for us, i.e. the public/taxpayers, to determine if Countrywide did get anything in exchange for its largess toward public officials.

Corruption among public officials does not surprise The Prince.  However, before, he could comfortably claim that the ineptitude of our elected representatives and government agencies to control the mortgage market that spiraled out of control (in a whirlwind of conflicts of interests, greed, fraud, manipulation, weakening lending standards, and cheap money) could be attributed to ignorance or lack of resources/creativity to actually police the mortgage industry/market.  If you need evidence of how widespread the problems were in the industry just read the new stories about Countrywide, Fannie Mac, and Bear Stearns since last spring.  Better yet, take a look at Mortgage News Clips for its carefully selected stories and commentary or read Richard Bitner’s book on the problems in the industry from the Countrywide’s and WAMU’s down to the mortgage broker on main street.

Let’s think about this.  How would we be able to show that Countrywide got preferential legislative treatment or better pricing from Fannie Mae when it sold the quasi-government backed company loans for its portfolio?  The regulatory environment in the mortgage industry was lax or non-existent and ripe for fraudulent and systemically destructive behavior for years before Countrywide started handing out bribes in the form of cheaper mortgage to public figures who could influence such a regulatory environment.  Countrywide was the largest mortgage originator/lender in the country.  So how will we know it got better pricing than it deserved from Fannie Mae?  Fannie Mae can always claim that Countrywide got better prices for its loans because of its size in the industry.

Even if Countrywide did not get better prices for the loans it sold to Fannie Mae, the GSE still probably turned a blind eye to loans that it knew where rife with fraud red flags and made in an extremely weak underwriting standard environment.  Shouldn’t the fact that Fannie Mae bought loans from Countrywide at all in 2006 and 2007 amount to preferential treatment?  If nothing else it shows a severe lack of judgement just like Johnson’s decision to not disclose his personal financial arrangement with Countrywide showed terrible judgment.  Even if he had disclosed such a sweetheart deal having such a sweetheart mortgage deal from Countrywide presents a conflict of interest that if maintained is just bad business.

As far as the public officials that have been caught up in Angelo Mozilo’s shady graft game of waving points, giving lower rates, and writing loans that may not have made good business sense The Prince is not surprised.  The hypocrisy in Washington has always been thick enough to cut with a knife so why should we expect different when it comes to the largest financial failure in our nation’s recent past?   Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd, North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Alphonso Jackson, former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala, and former U.N. ambassador and assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke were part of Countrywide Financial’s "V.I.P." program in 2003 and 2004.  The program waived points, lender fees and company borrowing rules. The FoAs were given more desirable deals than those available to non-influential borrowers. Perhaps no piece of Portfolio’s article hits harder than the section regarding the refinancing of an 8-unit apartment building in Bismarck, North Dakota, which violated Countrywide’s policy of not giving loans for larger buildings.  According to Portfolio, Mozilo apparently told a staffer to "make an exception due to the fact that the borrower is a senator."  If there is a God then Mozilo will go to jail for securities fraud or at least insider trading for the $474 of supposedly "scheduled" Countrywide share sales.  Or I guess we could just all hope that the voters put the screws to the public officials benefiting from his largesse.  The Prince is not holding his breath.

Then again why is The Prince or anyone else getting worked up about this?  Just one more sad story to add to the pile that have come out of the mortgage crisis.

The Prince is aware that his posting has been slow but he has been moving over the last week and will resume more regular posting once things get settled down.  It has actually really broken the Prince’s heart to not be blogging with all the interesting action occurring in the financial world, like the struggles of Lehman Brothers or the sweeping statements by different Fed officials on finance regulation.

Frustrating problem with Ares connecting

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 14, 2008

Filesharing is one of my favorite things. Not only does it mean that I get great music for free, but I really enjoy pondering the socio-economic consequences of sharing what is essentially someone else’s property over the vastness of the Internet. Essentially it’s the free stuff that I like most, though.

So when I turn on my computer to find Ares not connecting properly, it really sends me wild. And this is not the first time I’ve had problems with Ares connecting: last year around December time the same thing happened for a while; again the problem occurred the year before. All very frustrating, let me tell you.

The problem of Ares not connecting is down to the way in which it handles the cnodes – the IPs that it connects to – between sessions. Ares should keep a list of last known ‘good’ IPs that it will try and connect to when you next fire up the old software. If this list of IPs is not good then we get problems with Ares connecting.

The problem seems to be limited only to older versions of Ares like Ares Galaxy, and fortunately doesn’t occur with later versions of Ares. Ares Ultimate was my, ahem, ultimate choice, but Ares Vista is a great candidate that does not suffer this problem.

Have you been there before? I like the stunt show and seeing all those high value models like Ferrari and Lamborghini displayed elegantly. However, this year, the absence of these exquisite marques will be greatly missed. Argh!

TWO years after major European brands pulled out of the Singapore Motorshow, the event is set to shrink further.

Only five car brands – Honda, Subaru, Nissan, Alfa

Ways To Avoid Home Business Failure

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 13, 2008

When you are working from home, there is always going to be something inside of you that says that no matter how much work you do, you can always do more. This is something that a lot of home business owners find. Because their work is at their home, they are always tempted to keep working. It is ironic because most of the people who run home businesses have thought that they would do this so they do not have to work hours that are longer.

They have probably thought that by working at home they could cut back on the hours that they were at work. And this is usually true but as everyone knows, setting up a home business can take many hours and if you have everything that you need at your home, it might be tempting to go to work for awhile after you eat supper or once the kids are in bed.

This can be a dangerous habit because if you start to do so much work that you are working in the evenings, you are going to find that you want to do even more work and that you take on more. Pretty soon you will find yourself working 20 hour days and your family will be wishing you go back to your old job because then at least once you were home, you were home for the night.

There are several ways to avoid this but first you must understand that it is vital that you take steps to avoid working all day and night. You mgith think you are being very productive but you need to know that working too many hours will make you burn out on what you are doing and might cause you to cut corners because you simply do not care any more. You might find that you have to go back to your old job because you simply can not stand your home business any longer. It is very important that you do not work long hours.

There are ways to make sure this happens. First of all, from the beginning, set hours for yourself. Tell yourself that you will only work certain hours and then stick to it. Depending on what you are doing in your home business there are ways to do this. If you are a project based home business, take only as many projects as you can complete in regular hours. If you are a home business that relies on being available, be sure that you have clear cut hours to work.

These can be any that you wish. If you want to work all day and night, that is fine but then be sure you are taking many days off a week. If you want to work for 3 days straight, and then have 4 day long weekends, this might be a great way to spend time with your family. If you want to work each day, then make your days shorter.

How to Give a Confident Interview

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 13, 2008

Giving an interview can be one of the more stressful things you have to do, and there’s so much advice out there it’s hard to know where to start or which advice you should follow. The thing to remember is that giving a confident interview is a skill that can be learned, just like making a cracking omelette, driving a car or delivering a presentation. Here are my 5 tips to giving a confident and effective interview.

1. Know your subject, but don’t over-prepare

Years ago I turned up to an interview for a Project Manager position at a medical logistics company, knowing nothing at all about the company or the industry they operated in. Fortunately it wasn’t a job that I wanted, which was just as well because I didn’t stand a chance.

You need to know your stuff; the company’s products, services, market position, opportunities, etc. Read up on the company prior to the interview, but be careful not to over-prepare.

It’s also a good idea to figure out how you’ll respond to some likely questions, but knowing your subject isn’t a case of simply repeating memorised information, and if you go to an interview planning on spouting facts and figures there’s a risk that you’ll sound too rehearsed or stilted. Know what you’re talking about but leave room to think on your feet; you don’t have to be word perfect, you don’t need to know everything or have a slick answer for every question.

One more thing here – sometimes the interviewer wants to see how you think on your feet and might throw a curveball question at you. If that happens don’t overthink it and don’t panic. Buy yourself some time by repeating the question and even saying that you hadn’t expected it. Then shoot from the hip.

2. Don’t sweat it

First of all, whether it’s a 1st interview or 3rd interview, always remember that the simple fact that you’ve been shortlisted means that they’re interested in talking to you and think you might be right for the job. That’s a good thing.

Of course, it’s easy to focus on the drama of the interview and loose your cool as a result. A friend of mine was telling me recently about how she panics as she goes through each round of interview, piling on more and more pressure on herself.

Focusing on the problem and the drama will only ever give you more drama, and that’s exactly what you don’t need. Yes, interviews can be nerve-wracking, but it’s okay to be nervous. Being nervous makes you give a better interview, because you have to up your game accordingly and can use that nervous energy to demonstrate your enthusiasm and energy.

2 thoughts for you. First of all, how would you approach the interview if there was nothing riding on it personally? What difference would it make if you knew that whatever decision they make is just fine, and is no reflection on you or your ability? A shift in how you perceive the interview and it’s risks can work wonders.

Secondly, try writing down a step-by-step guide – a how-to manual – for how to make someone else feel like you do when you feel nervous or panicky. How do you start that feeling going? What do you think to yourself that makes that feeling grow? What do you do that makes it worse? Write it down step by step and you’ll be clearer on what you’re doing that gets in your way. Then you can write the opposite how-to guide, countering each step with something else that will get you a different result.

3. Understand that an interview is a 2-way street

In a survey conducted by recruitment consultancy Office Team, just under half of the employees surveyed said they’d misjudged the culture of a company, and 59% of HR managers said they’d misjudged someone’s fit for a role.

That’s why an interview has to be a 2-way street. It’s a method of establishing whether you’re the best candidate for a role and if the role and organisation is a good fit for you. It’s not simply about the interviewer pulling out the information they need to make their decisions, you need to get the information you need to make your decision.

The interviewer is not your enemy – you need to see how the role and organisation fits you just as much as they need to see if you’re the best match for the job. With that in mind, it’s a level playing field – there’s no ‘upper hand’.

4. Don’t be afraid to blow your own trumpet

The whole point of an interview is to sell yourself to the person interviewing you. Fail to recognise that or fail to do it effectively and it’s game over.

So the first step is to reconnect with your strengths, expertise and experience if you’ve forgotten what you’re about, what you’ve achieved and what your capability is.

Then you’re in a good place to let your interviewers know what you’ve achieved by means of example – that’s the information they’re looking for.

The saying goes that an interview is 2 people in a room lying to each other. I wouldn’t go that far and lying during your interview is like dressing a cow in a duck costume and asking it to quack – it’s not going to fool anyone.

But you know what? Feel free to embellish a little. Big yourself up a bit more. Say that you had a little more responsibility than you did. Tell them that your results were a little bit more special than they were. Those are all valid parts of the interview process and it doesn’t mean that you’re misrepresenting yourself. It simply means that you’re selling yourself and giving a great interview.

5. Enjoy yourself

I’ve interviewed a good few people in my corporate past, and there was always one thing that made a candidate stand out head and shoulders above the rest – the fact that they were enjoying themselves, not just in the interview but generally in their life.

With one exception (where the interviewer had a serious chip on their shoulder and was determined to make it an unpleasant experience; I doubt anyone took that job) I really love being interviewed, because I get to use some of the stuff I love doing. I get to build rapport with someone, talk about me for a bit (come on, we all like a bit of that), have some interesting conversations and even have a giggle.

That’s more important to me than being ‘professional’, which in too many cases means squeezing yourself into a box based on what you think your potential employer wants you to be like (more on being ‘professional’ in a future post).

That’s why it’s important to figure out what’s important to you and what you enjoy, then leverage those things. If you look like the interview is torture or are just generally down-beat, you won’t get hired. Simple as. If you’re engaging with what you’re doing and where you are, that really comes across and will speak volumes.

An interview is not a personal judgment on your character or ability. An interview is not the end of your world as you know it. Enjoy it, engage with it and bring who you are to the table.

Nuclear Free Zone

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 13, 2008

While I don’t go through passenger screening X-rays on the way to my airplane, the US is introducing screening with radiation detectors for private aircraft. My information comes from USA Today, the complimentary newspaper of choice for US hotels, so it’s probably completely wrong, but it claims that since the beginning of this year some private planes have been screened, and details tests to determine whether the screening equipment is adequate to find uranium, cesium-137, cobalt-57 and barium-133. Reading between the lines, that suggests that the screening equipment was purchased and put into service without verification that it could do the job, but I suppose better late than never.

I haven’t (to my knowledge) had my airplane radiation screened yet, and I’m not sure I will: it may be only arrivals from overseas that receive the screening. I do know that one of my coworkers was detained at the border because they detected radiation on his person. He had three days earlier been injected with a radioactive substance for a medical test, and apparently was still carrying enough of it that to trigger the detectors. He was subjected to a serious secondary interrogation, berated for not having a doctor’s note, and finally they agreed that the signature of the radiation matched his story and let him through.

So remember, if you’re going to be radioactive while crossing the border, always bring a note from your doctor.

Inflation Concerns Pressure USD

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 12, 2008

The dollar fell versus most key currencies Wednesday as oil prices surged to a new all-time high increasing inflation concerns. Minutes from the April 29-30 Federal Open Market Committee meeting showed most FOMC members were concerned about inflation as they ‘viewed the decision to reduce interest rates at this meeting as a close call.’ However, the minutes did not boost the greenback. Inflation concerns are the key driver of the FX market. The oil-price surge is an indication of the Fed’s too easy monetary policy as well as a major driver of the dollar’s decline. Although the Fed’s easy monetary stance increases not only the US inflation rate but also the worldwide inflation rate, investors prefer currencies where inflation targeting has been used, like the euro and dollar block currencies, as they are less prone to inflation. The AUD/USD rose on surging commodity prices and international interests in Australia’s commodity companies. The USD/CAD fell to the lowest in more than two months on record oil prices and speculation the Bank of Canada will be less likely to cut rates after a report showed Canadian inflation accelerated in April. The GBP/USD was little changed ahead of tomorrow’s UK retail sales data. The risk-sensitive yen and Swiss franc rose as US equities sold off.

The EUR/USD had its biggest two-day gain since March on an unexpected rise in German business confidence, reducing bets the European Central Bank will cut rates anytime soon. The pair is also highly correlated with crude oil that rose above $133/barrel. The EUR/USD looks poised to test the 1.59 resistance or even the all-time high at 1.60. First support is now at 1.57 and second at 1.54.

Financial and Economic News and Comments

US & Canada

- The Federal Reserve signaled no more interest-rate cuts and raised its expectations for unemployment and inflation this year. The minutes from the April 29-30 Federal Open Market Committee meeting showed ’several members noted that it was unlikely to be appropriate to ease policy in response to information suggesting that the economy was slowing further or even contracting slightly in the near term.’ The Fed also released updated quarterly economic forecasts with the minutes. The Fed forecast the US GDP to rise between 0.3% and 1.2% this year, down from the last forecast of growth between 1.3% and 2%.
- Canada’s consumer-price inflation rose to 1.7% y/y and 0.8% m/m in April, Statistics Canada reported. The rise in the annual inflation rate to 1.7% y/y from March’s 1.4% y/y is the first inflation-rate increase since November 2007 driven by an 11.6% y/y rise in gasoline prices. The Bank of Canada’s core CPI, which the BOC uses to monitor the inflation target, increased 0.3% m/m, and rose 1.5% y/y in April from March’s 1.3% y/y

- Canada’s leading economic index rose 0.1% m/m in April, the first increase since January. Six of the index’s 10 components rose, led by the stock market and sales of durable goods, Statistics Canada said.

Europe

- German business confidence unexpectedly rose to 103.5 in May from 102.4 in April, the Ifo institute said. The business conditions index rose to 110.1 in May from 108.4 in April, and the business expectations index climbed to 97.3 from 96.7. Although unexpectedly rising, the indicators are mostly below 2007’s readings indicating economic momentum is gradually losing speed.

- The Bank of England voted 8-1 to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 5.0%. The majority of BOE policy makers argued that a rate cut risked letting inflation get out of control

Asia-Pacific

- The Australian consumer sentiment index rose to 89.8 in May, the first increase this year, from 87.4 in April, Westpac Banking Corp. and Melbourne Institute reported. The sentiment index recorded its fourth straight reading below 100, indicating pessimists outnumber optimists

Affiliate Program Business Opportunity: An Opportunity That Will Make You Earn A Lot Of Money

Posted by jeromesimpson on July 12, 2008

It didn’t take long for the internet to become one of the largest income generating businesses today. Even regular people, such as yourself, will have a chance to make a lot of money by just using the internet.

If you think that the internet is only used for communicating with your family and friends, then you are missing one of the best business opportunities of your life. Because there are millions of companies and businesses offering their products and services over the internet, they are now finding ways to effectively market their products and services over the internet.

Many successful businesses and companies have found that regular people who are maintaining their very own website can now be “hired” to advertise their product for them. This particular internet marketing strategy is called affiliate programs.

The concept of affiliate programs are simple and even you will be able to take advantage of this kind of business opportunity. First of all, you have to remember that because of the internet marketing boom, many companies are now having problems selling their products and services. This is because different companies are now offering similar products.

This is where you come in. You will be able to help a particular company by joining their affiliate program. All you need is a desktop computer with an active internet connection and a website to join an affiliate program.

Of course, the first thing you need to do is optimize your website on a popular search engine. What website optimization means is that your website should at least be in the first three search results of a search engine. To do this, you have to generate a lot of targeted traffic. So, it is important to make your website known so that you will have regular visitors in your website in order to sell the affiliate program’s products and services.

To do this, you have to first choose a particular topic for your website. It is important that the topic should be one that you are knowledgeable about in order to know what to put in your website. For example, if you like auto mechanics and you are knowledgeable about the subject, then you can get a website designed to contain automotive topics. To make your website known, you should try and publish articles over the internet about automotive. This way, you will be able to get interested readers to visit your website.

If you now have sufficient targeted traffic in your website, and you continue updating the contents of the website, it is now time for you to apply for an affiliate program. It is very important that you should apply for an affiliate program that is also similar to what you are discussing in your website. For instance, if you are discussing about auto parts or about cars, then you should get affiliated with a company that sells auto parts or one that sells cars. Besides, your readers are interested about cars or auto parts, by putting an affiliate program about dogs or cats, you won’t have any sales at all unless your website is discussing things about pets or about pet grooming.

In time, and by maintaining your website, you will see that you will earn a commission from every referral your website makes. The best things about this is that your website will be open for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Just make sure that you update your readers about the latest news about your website topic.
